THE JENNIFER PROJECT — Audio narrative

After exploring a variety of topics via email, which can be found in the written narrative section of this website, an in-depth phone interview with Jennifer was conducted.

• You had mentioned earlier that “When I came out for the second time, to myself, it was a much harder thing to realize; not only was my sexuality was of a queer nature, but my gender identity was as well. “ What is the difference between being queer and gender identity?
• What is the difference between transgender and “multi-gender?”
• When you realized you were “mult-gender” as you have coined it, what did this do to your concept of gender roles?
• It seems that reading the book Gender Queer was pretty significant for you.  How did this book change you or your self-perception?
• For many people, saying that you are not just female but male also would be confusing.  How could you describe this better in a way to someone that sees only two genders?
• You just spoke about defining one's own gender identity and gender expression. How do you know you have found who you are versus merely becoming who you have been socialized to become?
• Thinking about some of the things you have just said brings up an interesting question.  If you were to write about yourself, which pronoun would you use?
• You wrote earlier about Valentine’ Day and said the following,”There was this incredible rush of happiness to finally be in love on a holiday all about love." Why was that so important and how if at all has your view changed?
• You wrote earlier about how you felt "powerless inside and out" when you were in high school.  Tell me a little about about that and how that has changed for you?
• How have your friends and\or family supported you in this process of coming out and coming to terms with who you are?
• How have friends, family and peers hindered your development over these last several years?
• What has helped you become secure and self-accepting?
• Has anyone dated or romantically pursued you thinking you were someone else?
• In your written narrative you wrote about your involvement with"Transformers" during your freshman year in college.  It seems to have been a very significant experience. Can you tell me a little bit about that and why it was so important to you?
• You wrote the following in regards to your sexuality and gender.  “I will simply be who I am with the name that I as given when I was received this world and it received me… The only thing I will change about myself is my self-perception.” What would you change and have you already done this?
• In  4th grade your classmates asked if you were “really a girl.”  At that time you replied that you really were “a girl.” Knowing yourself better now and having matured, would you have replied in the same way? What do you think now when you step into a women’s room?
